Crediting his original partner, Frank Iacovangelo, with the "aspirations, energy and visions" that made the firm grow, Louis Gallo says he most enjoys the wide range of legal work and the wide variety of people he has represented for 40 years. "I always had some ability to engage people, to put them at ease. People who come to attorneys are people in some distress, and they are looking for someone on whom they can depend, someone they can trust."
Of Counsel
Now semi-retired and of counsel to the firm, Mr. Gallo still meets with clients and acts as a resource for staff attorneys He continues to accept a good amount of pro bono work, in the belief that "you have to pay back a little bit for what you've gained." A soft-spoken, gentle man, it comes as no surprise when Mr. Gallo confides that his first interest was in medicine. But World War II intervened, and after serving two years in Italy in the U.S. Army, he returned to Rochester to marry, work and attend the University of Rochester all at once. "I was almost 30 years old when I became a lawyer. Had I opted for medical school, I would have been even older before I began my profession."
Courthouse Memories
Still, the law had always held a special fascination. "When I was a boy, during the Depression, we would go down to the old courthouse and watch the trials. I was about 12 when I walked up to Mr. Charlie Relin and asked him, 'Are you a lawyer, sir?' He handed me his card. I never forgot it."
Mr. Gallo and his wife, Lucy, live in the City of Rochester. They have one son, one daughter, and four grand-children. Mr. Gallo enjoys gardening and home repair work, works out regularly, and travels when he can.
